Home care: visiting support at home

How visiting home care is arranged, what visits include, and how to keep quality consistent.

Visits are built around tasks and times

Home care is usually agreed as a number of visits per week with a length and purpose for each — personal care, medication, meals, companionship. Be specific: a 30-minute visit and a 60-minute visit are very different experiences.

Ask about the care plan and reviews

A regulated home care provider must produce a care plan and review it. Ask how often it is reviewed, who writes it, and how you are told about changes.

Continuity, punctuality, escalation

The three questions worth asking every home care provider: how many different carers will we see, what happens if a visit is running late, and who do we ring at 9pm on a Sunday?
